October brings two big events. The first is the World Series of Baseball.  This pits the champion of the National League against the American League champions. This year’s series starts on Tuesday, October 24th in Los Angeles the home of the Dodgers. They are the National League champions. They are set to play either the Houston Astros or the New York Yankees who have won an amazing 27 titles. The St. Louis Cardinals have won 11, followed by the Athletics with 9, the Red Sox and Giants with 8 and the Dodgers and the Reds with five. The other event is, of course, Halloween. The name Halloween comes from All Hallows Eve being October 31st. The next day starts the three-day observance of Alhallotide-the time in the liturgical year for remembering the dead. I can’t think of Halloween and not think of the great magician and escape artist Harry Houdini. Houdini was the best entertainer in the country in the 1910’s and 1920’s. He was a star in vaudeville and movies spending the last years of his life trying to contact the spirits of the departed. He and his wife had a plan where she would try to contact him after his death. He died on October 31, 1926. His wife worked the plan for ten years and to this day groups still try to contact the great Houdini. Happy trick or treating!
