It’s very easy to say I can buy something today because I have just enough for the purchase, but if the car breaks down the next day you might regret spending the money on the new couch.

Let’s say you save $200 on that couch, put that much money in the savings account for the rainy day fund instead of leaving it in checking. Consider this as paying yourself for the time spent looking for the deal or coupon. This payment becomes part of the emergency plan or savings for the next item you need to purchase.

Do the same thing with savings from clothing sales and coupons. If you did some great research and saved $50 on a purchase pay the $50 to yourself. Before long you will have not only a great little emergency fund, but you’ll build a savings habit.
