Usage: 

  • Sarah turned green with envy when she saw Kimie’s new red Jeep with a 6″ lift.
  • The green-eyed monster hit Mack the moment he saw Jack’s new pool table and big screen TV.

Meaning:  an extremely emotional want for something another person has.

William Shakespeare is most often credited for originating these green envy phrases. Lago warns Othello in his Othello play: “Beware, my lord, of jealousy; it is the green-eyed monster which doth mock the meat it feeds on.”
